    LOVE OR WAR?

I really didn't know what to title this blog, but love or war seemed appropriate. This blog is a slightly altered response I sent to one of my good friends. She had e-mailed me with her opinions about the war in Iraq and asked the question "why do people hate so much?" There was more to the letter and I addressed all of the points. I felt a need to write this blog so that other people may know my feelings about the events happening around our country and the world.
Nothing our government does in Iraq is going to make a bit of difference, especially since those people don't want to change. I don't see how killing "x" number of people of a particular group is going to do anything to change the minds of those left standing. In fact, killing the number of "terrorists" they already have has had the opposite effect. Sure, there may not be as much violence right now, but that doesn't mean the people are ready to give up - they're regrouping. What the US forgets is that Muslim extremists believe they'll have a higher place in Heaven if they die in such actions as suicide bombings - all in the name of Allah. These people will kill as many Americans as possible because we're infidels and don't follow Allah. The same goes for the other groups of Muslims they're killing. The extremists see these others as traitors against Allah. The sad part is that both sides are claiming to be fighting the just war, a war FOR God. The US won't admit they take this stance but many Christians will tell you just that. People will invoke the name of God (or Allah or whoever) just to get the people into their way of thinking. If you ask me, our politicians, patriots, and many Christians are only using the name of our Most Holy God as a political come-on. God isn't really God to them, but instead is a political pawn. What lower form of sacrilege can ever be thought of and utilized?
Why do people keep slaughtering millions of other people all over the world? Anyone who is willing to pick up a gun in a war and kill someone they don't even know anything about is only doing so because they've been taught it's a matter of self-preservation. Our government can't even explain how this war is "protecting" the US. Have there been no more terrorists attacks because we've been keeping them on their "home turf"? No! They just haven't made any feasible plans yet they can carry out. If these people want to kill Americans on American soil no one is going to stop them. The government may have stopped a few attempts, but if these people are determined enough, the terrorists will accomplish another 9/11 or something even worse.
Another thing the government can't predict is what will happen when we finally pull out of Iraq. My guess is it'll be just like many other countries, when we leave things go back to the "same old, same old". Many people, even some of my family members, think I'm wrong. Wait and see what happens - if we ever get out of there. This is just like Vietnam. We accomplished nothing there and this war will be the same. The only reason any American is backing this war is we were lied to about their role in 9/11.
I think the people who are so full of hate feel absolutely nothing inside except hatred. Sure, they may love some people, but if anyone hates another group of people so much they're willing to go to war to eliminate that group they can't feel anything but hatred for that group. A group of soldiers see a woman coming toward them and tell her to stop. When she doesn't, they shoot her and the bomb she's carrying explodes. Do you think they feel guilt or sadness? No way! They feel proud and patriotic, slapping each other on the back then brag about it later. But was this woman truly their enemy? Think about it. In that culture, women are second class citizens, often treated worse than a stray dog. With that in mind, you'd know the woman had no choice. She was going to die in one of three ways: the men who told her to do it would kill her if she refused to co-operate, the soldiers would kill her if she got too close, or she would've died when the bomb exploded killing the soldiers in the process. I feel deep sorrow and compassion toward that woman. I believe most American soldiers wouldn't even give it a second thought.
It's the same way here in this country with the hatred. Look at how people look at and speak about American born Muslims. They're all lumped into the same group as the terrorists of 9/11. Why? Because many people are taught from a young age to hate those people. Then there are people who were taught, like you and I were, to judge each person based on who they are as an individual and not the group to which they belong. The difference between them (those taught tolerance) and us is they're later pulled into the American way of thinking about those other groups - majority opinion rules and that's what we should also think. You and I (and many others) still hold onto what we were taught at a young age and then later the things we learned about what love is all about through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
All we can do is hang on to what we were taught, even though people may hate us or think us unAmerican because we don't support this war or jump for joy when we hear that another country we consider an enemy has been attacked by a country we consider our ally. Even other Christians will hate us when we tell them that the reason we don't stand and cheer at patriotic rallies is because this country isn't our true home. The Bible tells us we must live in this world but we shouldn't become like the world. As far as I'm concerned, that means while I live in the US, vote in the elections, support the economy by spending my paycheck on goods and services, and everything else "normal" people do, it doesn't mean I have to jump on the patriotic bandwagon and think everything this country does is perfect, just, and done in the name of God.
Answer these questions even though they may sound ridiculous. If cocaine was legalized, would you snort it because everyone else is doing it? If the government passed a law saying that each married couple could only have two children and any additional pregnancies must be terminated, would you have the required abortion? If the Bible was added to a list of books that have been considered illegal to own or read, would you throw your Bible on the bonfire? If you knew that you would be executed for confessing that Jesus is your Lord and Savior, would you deny being one of his followers when asked? I'm sure you're like me and answered "no" to all of these questions.
The reason people like you and I get a sick feeling in our gut when we listen to the news and hear about the death toll in any war, we feel sorrow for the loss of life of gang members we don't even know shot down in the street, and we can't condone the vigilante justice dealt out by fellow citizens because they feel the legal system won't rule in their favor is because we've learned the message of Christ. Many people will dig out the Bible passages that support their particular stance, but I believe the message couldn't be any clearer. We're not of this world, our weapons aren't carnal, and it's God's job to judge whether a person should live or die. Our jobs as followers of Christ is to spread the gospel message - the "Great Commission" first given to the disciples and handed down to us through the generations.
How can we tell someone about the saving grace of God if we hate them and are more convinced they should be killed? The hatred people feel toward another group means they don't even want to try to talk. It's more like shoot first and ask questions later. Do you really think someone is going to listen to you talk about the love of Christ after you just tried to kill them? Of course they won't and I know you agree. I would much rather die with the great message of love and compassion of Christ coming out of my mouth then to live with such raging hatred toward any group of people.
While we must continue to live in this world, we'll have many times we feel physically ill because we can't see any love in the world. We'll have many sleepless nights praying because people continue to use God's name to justify all of the evil in the world. And most of all, we'll continue to look forward to the day Christ returns to reign among us, the day when all love will be perfected. The sad part of that day will be knowing there are people who miss out on that all encompassing love simply because someone decided their life had no value and they were killed before they ever had a chance to know there was a different way to live. All we can do is continue to love through the hate and reach out to everyone, regardless of who they are or the group to which they belong, with the message of salvation through Christ.
Jesus is our hope and our salvation, not the opinions of other people about who we are or how unpatriotic we may be. When life here is over, Jesus is going to reach out to you, embrace you in his loving arms, and say to you "well done good and faithful servant".
As for me ... I'll never turn my back on God. I did that at one point in my life and stayed away for too many years, but I'll never do it again. Wherever God will lead me, I will follow.

    PRO-LIFE

What does the term "pro-life" mean to you? Is it simply a term you use when discussing the abortion issue? When you say you're pro-life, does that extend to ALL human life or just the unborn babies who're dying by the thousands everyday both in the United States and other countries? If you're one of the hundreds or thousands of people who say the term "pro-life" only applies to the abortion issue, then perhaps you should use the term "anti-abortion" and not "pro-life".
What does the term "pro-life" mean to me? I'm very pro-life. Whether you agree or not, everyone has a right to live. That not only includes the unborn children in the womb of a mother who doesn't want that baby, but also the murderer sitting on death row, the enemy soldiers out in the deserts and mountains, and everyone else most people feel are "worthless excuses for human beings". I'm not saying these people should be left to roam the streets, they do need to be justly punished. I just don't see the logic in saying you're pro-life (what I view as an all-encompassing term), when you're so willing to either kill a person yourself or have someone else do it for you.
I've chatted with people who use the term "pro-life" very, very loosely. These are the people who want to save the unborn children by blowing up abortion clinics while the doctors and nurses are inside. Some of these people claim every person has a right to live their lives as they see fit (with the exception of killing innocent babies), yet as soon as they hear about American soldiers being killed in the cities and deserts of the middle-east start yelling "Nuke the ______!" [You fill in the blank with whatever word you choose]
You can argue the point until you're blue in the face and I won't change my mind about this. If I'm going to be pro-life, I'm going to be fully pro-life. I know all of the arguments from the other side of the debate ... I've been on that side myself. Yes, God commanded the Israelites to wipe out entire nations, but until I hear him speak directly to me, I will never pick up a gun and go to war. I fully believe when Jesus said an eye for an eye no longer applies and we should love our enemies as ourselves that's EXACTLY what he meant. There is no longer to be an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth. Although he never says specifically a life for a life, I believe that's what he was saying, thus I can't participate in nor condone the death penalty.
The one argument which completely changed my attitude toward any and all killing was something my friend Gracey said to me a few years ago. As Christians, our job is to spread the gospel and love other people. How is standing there with a gun in a Muslim's (even a radical and known terrorist) face showing love and spreading the gospel? No one is going to be sincere in their acceptance of God when their life hangs in the balance. Whether it's an enemy soldier on the battlefield or the inmate sitting on death row, how will they ever have a chance to repent and become a Christian once they're dead? Some people will point out they had their chance. Although you may never have killed someone, how many chances did God give you before you decided to join his family?
Don't tell me my beliefs are only for a select few people who may be called to embrace them. No matter how many scripture verses you throw at me, none of them will ever make me go back to living a life full of hatred and be ready and willing to kill anyone for any reason. You can continue to hold on to your own beliefs; however, I believe the Bible points toward Christians living a REAL pro-life life.

    LAST COMMENT

This will be the last blog commenting on what the people currently on my friends list already know. Some people are going to think I deleted some blogs so no one else who ever visits my space will be aware of what happened. That's not the case. I apologized to the people who I needed to apologize to and some have chosen to forgive me and remain friends while others have chosen to move on. Everyone has their choices to make in life ... whether for good or bad. Although I showed I can make bad decisions and choices, I ask God to forgive me and I repent of that error. God is gracious to forgive. Repenting means I'll never do such a thing again. As for anyone who, from this day forward, invites me to join their friend list, I think that choice should be based on my current behavior, words, and actions, not on something which occurred in the past. The only thing I can ask of my current friends is that you help me stay on the straight and narrow. We may not always agree on the current politics, life issues, or theology, but we can still be friends. Can't we?

    MY SPACES

Just to let my friends know, I will be keeping both (or all three) of my spaces open and active. Three you ask. Yes. Some of you know I have this space and the one called "Jake's Place". Others of you know I have a third space which is the unofficial Windows Space for a chat room I helped create. That one for the chat room and forums is only posted in the hopes some people may find it and come chat or post at our forums.
This space (the COG Zone) will be my most active space. I'll be back to adding blogs and reading all your blogs soon. I did remove some of the blogs I had here because I wanted a little bit of a fresh start. I thought about deleting them all and starting completely from scratch, but that would be silly. For the next little while, some of the "new" blogs you see will actually be some of the "old" blogs. Most of these were posted before most of you were added to my friend list, so they'll be new to you. If you've read them before, I'm sorry for the repeat information, but those blogs were buried so deep most people never see them.
Jake's space will also stay open. All of the blogs have been deleted from that space, but the links and lists still remain. You'll also notice a disclaimer telling people Jake is a fictional character (something I should've done before). The plan is use that space as a way to connect people to law enforcement information, relay kudos to law enforcement officers in my area, and tell people more about the novel on which I'm working and any subsequent novels (all of which will have Detective Jake as the main character). I probably won't do much work at that space for a while, so I hope you don't think I'm leaving there.
When I get back to posting here, these past few blogs will be deleted. Why? I've apologized to whom I had to apologize, everyone has had their chance to have their say (I think), and this blog as an explanation about what direction my spaces are going will kind of be unnecessary.
So that's my plan, at least at this time. Things might change as I get back to bogging and I may just remodel all of the spaces.

    GROUNDHOG DAY

Drufusg ask about Groundhog Day under my blog about the wolly bear caterpillars. For those of you from other countries ... Groundhog Day is an actual event here in the US. While many other states have a groundhog who "predicts" when spring will arrive, the original Groundhog Day was celebrated in my home state of Pennsylvania. The first groundhog to make this prediction was Punxatawney Phil. Yep, Punxatawney is a funny name and is the name of the town where the official prediction is made. There have been many groundhogs since that first year, but each and every one of them has been named Phil. The funny part of the whole event is that no matter what Phil "says", there's still six weeks until the official first day of spring by the calendar. Phil is not a wild groundhog as such. They don't just go out and pull any old groundhog out of his hole and ask him to make the prediction. Do I really need to tell you how dangerous it would be to wake up a groundhog who's not going to be very happy about being ripped out of hibernation? Phil is actually more like a pet and is well cared for so he's not very grouchy when people pick him up. Anyway, if you'd like to read all about Phil and Groundhog Day, visit http://www.groundhog.org.
I don't get into Groundhog Day. This may sound mean, but I'd like to see the Phil get revenge. Just one little love tap when the guy holds him up to his ear like he's listening to what Phil is saying. There's a groundhog who lives in my backyard. I have to get some pictures downloaded so you can see him. I call him Chubby because he's just that, a big fat groundhog. When I see him out eating the new grass and clover, I know spring has arrived no matter what Phil or the calendar may say. A wild groundhog will only come out of hibernation once the temperatures reach a certain range and stays there for an extended period of time.
I hope you enjoy the website and learning about Groundhog Day here in Pennsylvania. As a side note, if you want to see a funny movie (not funny enough to watch more than once - in my opinion), rent Groundhog Day starring Bill Murry.

    LOST SHEPHERDS - HOMOSEXUALITY

We wonder why there are so many lost sheep in the church today. It's not because these people are stupid, it's because the people who're supposed to be their "shepherds" are lost themselves. It's a case of the blind leading the blind. Some of my beliefs have been wrong and over time I've taken correction and have gotten my mind around the truth. I'll be the first to admit some of my beliefs now may be wrong. However, there are certain things which are written in the Bible which are crystal clear. Even so, there are people out there (including members of the clergy) who will tell you "there are many interpretations on what the Bible says about that". For some things, this is true and the mistake doesn't hurt anyone. On the other hand, there are certain things for which there are multiple interpretations and the wrong interpretation IS hurting people. The interpretation isn't a real mistake, it's a way of changing what the Bible says so people can feel better about the way they live their life. Instead of correcting people, the pastors want everyone to feel good about themselves.
So what brought this up? A pastor of a Presbyterian church in the Pittsburgh area "married" a gay couple. The Presybterian board (or whatever it's called) held a meeting to see whether or not the pastor should be defrocked. The final conclusion: Since Pennsylvania doesn't recognize gay marriage, the pastor couldn't have actually performed a "marriage ceremony". She gets to stay in the pulpit.
I have a big problem with this decision. It doesn't matter that Pennsylvania doesn't recognize gay marriages. The fact is this pastor performed the ceremony which goes against the teachings of the Presbyterian church. Of course, that church is still wrong because they still allow pastors to "bless" homosexual couples. What message is this sending to the congregations of every Presbyterian church? And if it's happening in other denominations the same applies. It's telling people it's  acceptable to live in a way which goes against the Word of God. Don't argue, it does and that's the final word.
Homosexuality is described as an abomination in the eyes of God and is an offense punishable by death. No, I'm not advocating killing homosexuals because killing also goes against the Word of God. Check out Romans 1:26-32. If you believe the Bible is God's truth and has not been corrupted in any way, you can only believe homosexuality is wrong and has no place in the life of a Christian. If you're really a follower of Christ, you have to give up being a homosexual. I don't care how many arguments are put forth through science and psychology, homosexuals can change or God wouldn't warn us such behavior was wrong and we have to get the sin out of our lives.
I have friends who're gay. I won't abandon them while there's a chance I can help them. I don't constantly beat them over the head with Scripture, but I will let them know what God says about the lifestyle. I'd rather lose a friend by telling them the truth than to ever go against the Word of God. It's not the job of a pastor to play the tolerance game and change the truth of the Bible so as not to offend people. The Bible says the truth will always offend the unbelievers. People who live in unrepentant sin (keep living in sin) are going to Hell. That's not me being judgemental, that's God's truth. These pastors are leading people down the road to Hell instead of on the straight and narrow way leading to salvation.
