    GHOSTS?

After reading some of the comments left under my blog about demons and spirits and the messages I received about the blog, I decided to write this blog as a further explanation about my beliefs on the subject.
There are some people who believe ghosts or apparitions which appear in the form of someone they know are the spirits of the dead person. Others will explain these appearances in a way similar to what I said in the previous blog. If the apparition is malevolent, it's a demon appearing as someone else. In the same light, if the apparition is benevolent, it's an angel appearing in a comforting form. While I do believe demons and angels can take many forms, I don't believe the ghost or apparition is, in any way, the actual spirit of a dead person.
Why do I say this? I'll point out a few Biblical passages. If I've misinterpreted these or am mistaken in my reading of these passages, I'm open to correction.
There is a gulf which exists between the dead in heaven and hell, as well as between the living and the dead. This can be seen in the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). In the final verse, in reponse to the rich man asking that Lazarus be sent to his living brothers, Abraham tells the rich man that people will not believe the truth as set forth by Moses and the Prophets even if someone were to rise from the dead. I believe this to mean both a physical resurrection and the appearance of someone in the spiritual form.
However, we do see that angels perform special duties in watching over us and giving us advice. There are many stories throughout the Bible about the appearance of angels. The book of Hebrews mentions angels as being ministering spirits and states we can entertain angels without realizing the angel is an angel. These angels are not the spirits of "long lost loved ones". Angels are a special class of being, created by God to perfom certain duties. Although a common misconception, the spirits of dead people do not become angels when they die. Angels are angels and human beings are human beings even in their spiritual form.
I admit I don't know a lot about how the final judgement is going to work except to say everyone will stand before Jesus and be judged. Yet, as my friend Drew pointed out, Hebrews 9:27 states that man will die once and then be judged. Unless you believe in some middle "holding cell" where spirits go until the final great judgement, those spirits must go to either heaven of hell. If you're like me and believe the spirit of a dead believer goes straight to heaven, the converse must be true and the spirits of unbelieves go to hell. I don't think God messes around and allows any spirit to roam around doing whatever it chooses so I don't believe in "lost souls" or spirits who "have been trapped in our plane of existance".
The conclusion I draw is that if someone sees "dear old grandma" and she's walking around the house making sure the kids are safe, more than likely this is an angel sent by God to protect those grandchildren. If someone sees "the mean old geezer who killed his family" in the house and he's causing problems, this is a demon set on getting the family to turn away from God.

    EVIL BATTLES EVIL

I know some people will find this strange coming from a Christian, but I watch a show on Discovery Channel about ghosts and such. I don't believe in ghosts like some people do. I don't think anything which appears and most people say are "lost souls" or "the dearly departed coming back to help us" are really spirits of dead people, Even if they look like someone we've know or the pictures of people we know are dead, I still don't believe they're who they resemble. I do believe in angels and demons and that both of these can appear to us and take various forms.
On the episode today, the family was experiencing a "presence". The young daughter called them the "fairy girls". The mother/wife decided to get rid of these spirits. She did some research and found information about using sage "smudging" to "clean" the house. Smudging is when you burn the sage or incense so the smoke fills the rooms. I'm guessing the idea is the spirits don't like the smoke for some reason, so it drives them out of the house. Apparently, these two spirits didn't mind the sage and stuck around. The woman's next step was to find someone who could perform some type of ritual to "clean" the house. She found a group of Wiccan practioners who came to the house, performed a Wiccan ceremony, and the spirits left.
I missed the beginning of the show, so I don't know if the family involved were Christians. I'll say now, it really doesn't matter. However, if you are a Christian and experiencing evil influences within your home, don't battle evil with evil. There are Christians out there who will try anything to rid themselves or their homes of demons. This is very bad theology. While trying to combat evil in the way this woman did, you're opening yourself up to other demons. You may drive out the original spirit only to have yet another spirit move in. Many of the gods and goddesses invoked by Wicca don't even exist. On the other hand, some of these names are tied to anceint demons. Once called upon, they can move in to take the place of the demon being driven out.
Jesus is the only power we need to battle evil. If we demand, in the name of Christ, the evil depart, it will leave.

    THANKSGIVING

It's a little less than two weeks until we celebrate one of the largest holidays of the year here in the United States ... Thanksgiving.
History is mixed with legend when it comes to the meaning and origin of Thanksgiving. I won't bore you all with a history lesson. That's why other people create websites and they invented a little thing called Google. LOL! Ok, a little background. A group of people came to North America because they no longer liked the country where they were living. Many died on the trip over and even more died after they got here. Somewhere along the way, someone decided they needed to set aside a day to give thanks to God for providing them with a new home. All the settlers got together, had a church service, and shared a common meal. It wasn't until much later the President declared the day a national holiday. Then the day became commercialized and football became the focus of the day. Ok, that was over-simplified and the last part a little sarcastic, but I hope it helps.
The reason I'm writing about Thanksgiving a little early is I'd like to invite my friends from all over the world to join me in celebrating Thanksgiving. Here in the United States, we celebrate on November 27th this year. The date changes each year, being the last Thursday in Novemeber. I can't invite you all over for dinner, but we can all still celebrate together by taking some time during that day to spend some time with God giving him thanks for all of the blessings he's bestowed upon us through the past year. We all need to do this every day, but we can make this a special day when we spend even more time. Just an idea.
So I invite all of my friends, wherever you live, to celebrate Thanksgiving with me. We can make Thanksgiving more like it was intended to be and also make it a world-wide Christian holiday.

    SEARCH FOR TRUTH

I guess I should do a better job at "pitching" my book. As I found out through my research, even getting one of the large publishing companies to publish your book is no sign anyone will buy it. The only make their money when the book sells, receiving compensation in the form of commission on each book sold. I've talked to a few people who have recently had their first novels published and they suggest letting everyone I can think of know about my book. I should have thought about that when I posted my last blog, but no, I overlooked it until my friends ask me to tell them about it.
Before getting to the plot line ... stop groaning ... a little about my idea. I've always wanted to write a good story to entertain readers. Many Christians have told me they like fiction, but they hate when books are filled with graphic descriptions of violence and sex as well as cussing. So one of my goals is to please this group of readers. I have a deep interest in anything that has to do with forensic science and the crime solving process, so that led to a story which revolves around a detective. So you can all stop fidgeting and I can tell you about the basic plot, if you'd like to read more about how I came up with the idea for my first novel, you can visit my book website at http://www.detectivejake.com . There are two parts to the site, so follow the links to the book area. I'll tell you all when it goes on sell, but you can keep track at my progress at the website. I also have a Windows Space that mirrors that site - http://detectivejake.spaces.live.com . If you want to join my friends list there, I just want to let you know I'll be leaving comments at blogs through this space if your on my list here.
Now what you've all been waiting for ... at least I hope you're still here and reading this blog. The basic plot:

Jake is a homicide detective faced with trying to solve a drive-by killing while someone from within the ranks is trying his or her hardest to sabotage the case and an old nemesis seeks revenge. Due to certain events, Jake must find answers to the questions he has about his motivations for living and working. Questioning his abilities as a detective, he decides to work long enough to solve his current case, find another killer, and seek his own revenge.
Jake is not a man who believes in supernatural influences. Through the few weeks of working the homicide case, he learns the difference between his version of reality and the truth.

I consider myself a Christian writer and my novels will contain a lot of Christian themes. The main theme throughout my first novel is about Jake coming to realize God is real and active in his life.

    I'M STILL HERE

I just wanted to write a fast blog to let you all know I'm still here. I know I haven't posted any blogs in a few days and I haven't left many comments at other blogs, but I'm trying to cut down on the time I spend on the computer. If you've visited my other space, you know I've finsihed writing my first novel. Now I'm spending a lot of time trying to find an agent who will pitch my book to the publishers. While I'm waiting to hear back from some of letters I sent out, I started my second novel. I'm taking my writing seriously and want to have a second book ready in case the first one sells well or I need something else to present if no one accepts the first manuscript. Don't worry,  I'll still be around spaces and visiting all of my friends.

    MORE RACISM

I know most people around here seem to want to avoid any direct discussion about politics or the recent elections. That's cool. But this blog has a little to do with the elections and things I heard said afterward.
I knew there were people I work with who are racist. There have been a few who have made comments that were directly racist and this was before the current Presidential campaign. They've been saying things for years. Of course, they usually only made the comments when out of earshot of certain people, including me. But not always. I won't repeat any of those comments here. They've learned from their experience of saying the wrong thing in front of the wrong people to keep their opinions to themselves. That is until just a few days ago.
I would ask people if they voted. I didn't ask who they voted for, only if they voted. I did it for a deeper reason than just knowing who particpates in the elections. I wanted to see how many of the people would let something slip and show me their real way of thinking. It worked.
One guy made the comment about how how Obama supporters should being wearing towels wrapped around their heads. Ok, so this isn't a slam against African-Americans, but it is a slam against Muslims and anyone of middle eastern descent. This guy sees anyone who looks middle eastern as a terrorist. That's racism. Even though Obama has said time and time again he's a Christian, some people can't get over the rumors and lies. So what it comes down to is yet another racist among my co-workers.
Another racist showed her true colors by saying she voted for McCain so she could "support the white guy". It wasn't her just saying that, it was her tone of voice. She said it in a way that interpreted as "I'd never vote for a black man".
On the positive side, I saw people from all walks of life and all skin colors celebrating Obama's win. The local station showed how the kids at Pitt (local university) ran into the streets to celebrate. It was a true mix of all people. The same thing was shown by the crowd in Chicago. The thing about the college kids though is I see great hope in that celebration. It shows that the younger generation is turning away from racism. Sure, I'm not foolish enough to think racism will ever go away, but it's great to see the kids and a lot of other people supporting a man for his ideas and personality, not because of the color of his skin.

    TOLERANCE

I want to know your opinion. (1) What exactly is tolerance? (2) Where's the fine line between taking a stand for what you believe and intolerance? (3) Can we really preach tolerance, yet turn around and complain when a law or rule is enacted in the name of tolerance? (4) When, if ever, should we be intolerant of tolerance? In the name of fair play, I'll answer my own questions.

         (1) Tolerance is defined as "sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from one's own"; "the allowable deviation from a standard"; and, "capacity for enduring or adapting". - The New Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 1989. To me, tolerance is allowing other people to live their lives or believe what they want to believe unless their actions or words go against the laws under which we live. Tolerance means the elimination of prejudices based on gender, race, religion, nationality, etc.
         (2) To me, the fine line between taking a stand and intolerance lies at the point where we infringe on the Constitutional rights of an individual or group. If you live outside the United States, that means infringing on the person's rights as outlined by your government. Some people see my choice not to link my websites to certain other sites, those containing what I believe are false Christian teachings or the teachings of other religions, as intolerance. In my opinion, this is me taking a stand for the truth. It would be intolerance if I got involved with a group working to censor such sites and eliminate them from the internet.
         (3) We can't stand up and try to convince other people we should be tolerant of everyone, yet turn around and start whining when tolerance is accepted and incorporated into the laws of the land. I've heard so many people complaining about the elimination of Christian symbols from public buildings. These same people would "pitch a fit" if the Christian symbols were allowed to remain, but in the name of tolerance symbols from other religions were allowed to posted. Whether or not you consider America a "Christian nation", tolerance has to go both ways. If it doesn't, one side or the other is being intolerant.
         (4) This is related to number 3. To put it in the simplest form: It's intolerant of anyone to tell me I have to tolerate everyone else's opinions, beliefs, foul language, or whatever then not tolerate my opinions, beliefs, or whatever because they come off as sounding intolerant of other people.

The only way we're ever going to all get along and be completely tolerant of everyone else in this world is when we all get some kind of brain implant which makes us all believe the same, talk the same, and act the same. I don't know about all of you, but I'd rather live with a little intolerance and be in a world where people aren't all carbon copies of each other. We can try to understand each other and learn from each other, but I'll never compromise my beliefs and my integrity by doing something which goes against those deeply held beliefs. If I'm being intolerant, that's just how it's going to have to be.

    RACISM

Whether you're a Christian or not, there's no room for racism in this world. There never was. Ask yourself why you look at certain people and automatically dislike them. Most people can answer that question in one of two ways. The first is they've had personal conflicts with a person from a certain race or nationality. The other reason is because they've been raised to hate certain people because someone in their family or people in their community are racist. We learn by the example of the people around us.
Don't base your opinions of everyone within a group by what you've seen in a very small part of the group. If I did that, I'd hate everyone. I'm serious! In 42 years, I've been around a lot of different people probably covering every known group of people in this world. This means I've met and gotten to know people from different countries, religions, lifestyle groups, careers, etc. I'll be the first to admit there are some people within all those groups I don't like and don't want to be around. But I'm not racist, a bigot, or ready to label everyone within those groups as a lesser human being.
The worst thing you can do is hate an entire group of people because you've been taught those people are something less than human or because you think some people don't belong here - wherever "here" is for you. Look at the way hate groups such as the KKK and skinheads act. Just because you may not go that far, take a look at your own actions and listen to your own words. I have an aunt who will tell you she's not racist, yet she'll say things like "I like black people. I think everyone should own one". That's racism! My grandmother tried to avoid Asians - all of them. Why? Because when she saw an Asian person, her first thought was Japanese. Her second thought was they bombed Pearl Harbor. That's racism! The hate groups yell about how all non-whites should be sent back to Africa or Mexico or wherever. What they overlook is the fact many of these people and their families have been citizens of this country for many years. Wanting to ship them home because someone feels those people weren't originally here is racism!
Historical facts in the US: White, European ancestry is NOT the original culture and people in this country. If anyone should be yelling to ship people back to where they came from, it's the Native Americans or, to be more PC, the First Nations. The natives were the frist focus of racism. Then we look at dark-skinned people (I'd say African-American, but not all of them were originally from Africa). Slavery led to a belief these people were more closely related to animals than humans. Japanese-Americans (and other Asians) were rounded up during the world war and placed in interment camps for no other reason than racism disguised as protecting the US from attacks within by anyone of Japanese or Asian descent. Now it's Latinos (not all of which are Mexican or Cuban) and people of Arabic descent. People are looking at every Latino or Spanish speaking person as an illegal alien (an often misplaced assumption) and every person who looks like they're from the middle east as a terrorist.
We may never be able to completely rid this (or your) country of racism because there will always be people who have inferiority complexes and can only feel better about themselves by degrading other people. What we can do is get rid of racism in our lives and teach our family and friends to base our opinions on people as individuals and by seeing they all have worth - and not just as a scapegoat, to be the focus of our jokes, or as cheap labor.

    POSSESSION

As usual when I'm working second shift, when I left work I tuned the car radio to WORD-FM. They broadcast Adrian Rogers' sermons at 11pm every week night. I may not always agree with him, but this particular sermon was a good one.
I've been in discussions with many Christians about the topic of demon possession. Some will say anyone, Christian or otherwise can be possessed by demons. Others will say a real, born-again, Spirit-filled Christian can't be so possessed. The arguments ... On the "anyone can be possessed" side lie the arguments that by doing certain things we open ourselves to possession or the typical "anytime were stuck in a sin it's because we 'have a demon' ". There may be an iota of truth in the first statement (but I disagree) and the second statement seems to me to be the typical response for anyone who just doesn't want to take personal responsibility for their own actions. Or perhaps the person is being inhabited by a demon; however, if that be the case, I'm wondering if they're a Spirit-filled Christian. Before you think I'm judging anyone unfairly, please read on.
I don't believe a real, born-again, Spirit-filled Christian can be possessed by demons. As Adrian Rogers said, we can be influenced by demons (by falling to temptation) or we can be obsessed by a demon (continuing in a particular behavior). But we can't be possessed (or in-dwelled and thus controlled) by a demon. The first two things involve what might be artfully depicted as the devil sitting on our shoulder whispering in our ear. It's our decision to act on that advice or not. It's an outside influence. Actual possession would be when a demon manages to get inside of us and force us to do things against our will.
So why don't I believe a real Christian can be possessed? The answer is simple. A demon can't get into someone who is already filled with the LIGHT. The darkness of evil can't withstand or overcome the light and power of the Holy Spirit. Didn't Jesus promise to send the Holy Spirit to dwell within all who believe in him? Didn't he tell us this was a seal? The answer to both is yes. What demon has the power to break the seal God placed on believers? Do you really think the Holy Spirit would share his "house" with demons? A demon can NEVER overcome the Holy Spirit and take control of a true believer in our Lord and Savior.
