August 29 PSALM 23 I don't know if I should laugh, cry, or brush something off as the limited knowledge of some people. Below is the scenario.
Welcome to Jeopardy. Today, our winners will automatically advance to the College Tournament semi-finals. The categories in the first round are ... occupations. I'll take occupations for $400, Alex. The answer is ... In the Bible, this is the occupation listed in the first verse of the 23rd Psalm. Three college students stand there with totally blank looks on their faces. The buzzer sounds. Alex says, The Lord is my Shepherd. Three college students get looks on their faces like they should've known that one.
Come on! EVERYONE knows that one! Don't they? I guess not. I shake my head in disbelief that not ONE of the contestants knew the answer. It's not like they were asked to name some king only mentioned once in that long of kings. It's not like they were ask to give one of the lesser known names in the genealogical lineage of Jesus. What's wrong with these people?
I don't know if any of these kids were Christians or not. But I'm serious ... I thought everyone knew or had at least heard the 23rd Psalm and would know the answer. I can't say I know EVERYTHING about the Bible and I sure can't answer every question ... but the 23rd Psalm? I'd be embarrassed to call myself a Christian and not know the answer to that one.
I'm not trying to boost my ego by putting down other people. I'm just shocked. What I did learn was there's a HUGE need for people to be teaching the basics of the Bible. I know I don't use my blog space here to do much in the way of Bible studies. I do try to put in some life applications. Even though I may not come right out and say "this is what the Bible says" when I blog or leave comments, my writings and thoughts are all based on Biblical concepts. At least I hope they are doing so.
So here's my invitation to anyone who visits the COG Zone. If you have any questions about the Bible or how something should apply to your life, leave your question in the comments of any blog or send me a message. I'll do my best to answer anyone's questions. If I don't know the answer, I'll do the research. If I still can't find an answer, I'll tell you straight out I don't know. I NEVER make stuff up just to have a ready answer. My hope is, by working together, we can each help each other become better equipped to spread the Gospel and have answers to any questions people may have ... even if it's a simple Jeopardy question about the occupation mentioned in the 23rd Psalm. August 25 NICKNAMES Margaret had a blog at her site in which she talked about some of the nicknames for people in her family. At the end, she asked if her friends had any nicknames. I told I had had several, but only listed one. I'll tell you some of my nicknames and why people have called me those names. I think nicknames tell a little about the person.
As far as I know, my family never had any nicknames for me. Well, my brothers called me some names, but you know how that is don't you? Here's some of my other names.
Ralph. Go ahead and laugh. Some of my friends in high school called me Ralph, but that didn't last long. It was kind of a running joke among our little group. One day we were talking about middle names. I gave my middle initial and no one could guess. When I said it sounded like a boy's name, Kathy yelled out Ralph and I told her she was right. So it kind of stuck.
Rae. This isn't really a nickname, it's my real middle name. When I was stationed in Maryland, the nurses seemed to call me everything except Sheila. I got Sherry, Shelly, Celia, etc, etc. It was so bad, the new people couldn't remember my real name. To make it easy, I told them just to call me Rae.
Tela and Sheesha. LOL! I love these. My cousins don't call me these any more, but when they were little, they couldn't say my name. Tela always came first. After they learned the "sh", it became Sheesha.
Doc. This also started in the Navy. As a Hospital Corpsman, the Marines all called me Doc. Even after getting out of the Navy, some people caught onto that one and used it.
Mouse. I worked one season at an environmental camp for kids. During one session we had to pick nature related names to use. I didn't know what to pick and my one room mate said this was a good one. We had mice in our house and I would live trap them and take them out and let them go in the woods.
COG1999 (aka Cogly aka Cogster). This is the username I created the first time I ever used a chat room. I use it everywhere. COG = Child of God and 1999 is the year I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. The variations come from my many chat buddies. Big Orange. The one temp at work started calling me this. The first time I wore my bright orange Tennessee Volunteer shirt to work after he started, he said "Go big orange". Now he just calls me Big Orange.
I'll add more if I remember any names as a kid or if anyone starts calling me something else. LITTLE LEAGUECONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!

Either that or a lot of us are sitting around just thinking about getting older. I'm *mumbles something*. LOL! I'm 42. Is that old? I guess it depends on who I ask. If you're as old as my parents, you'd probably call me a kid. If you're under about 30, you probably think I'm old. And if you're younger than 20, you probably think I'm ancient. LOL! Some days I feel my age, some I feel like I'm older than my parents, and other days I feel like a little kid. I'm going to stay positive and figure I act the age I need to act on any given day or for a particular situation.
I don't think I have an old person's body. At least not yet. Sure I have gray hair, but I'll share a secret with you. I had some gray hair while I was still in high school. It's a family thing. I also have some wrinkles, but thats' ok. Other than that, I think I'm in pretty good shape for my age. I don't plan on dying my hair, wearing makeup, or having plastic surgery any time soon. In fact, I don't ever plan on doing any of those things.
Even though some of you may not like the way you're aging, I think you're all beautiful. God allows us to become older, so why should we fight against that? People become even more beautiful as they age. Don't say that doesn't apply to you. Who cares if you go all gray (or bald), lose all your teeth, or become very wrinkled. God made you the way you were, the way you are, and the way you'll be. The other thing is to never stop moving no matter how old you feel. When you stop moving and doing, that's when you really get old. Keep a young mind and a young heart and it won't matter how old you look on the outside. August 17 ONE OF THESE DAYS One of these days, I'm going to learn to keep my mouth shut or (in the case of chat rooms, message boards, and blog spaces) I'll learn to keep from fingers from typing. I have this "thing" about my personality which comes out whether I'm talking to someone in person or on the internet. The "thing" is when I feel I need to say something, I just say what's on my mind. I go on and on about how people need to speak kindly and with love, then I feel I turn around and say something which comes off sounding like it's "my way or the highway". Hey, you can take my advice or change your minds about something or you can just ignore me, it's your choice.
One of these days, I'll learn to keep my opinions to myself. I've heard people say you should never discuss religion or politics. I now know there are other things better left unsaid. When someone asks how you're doing, they usaully don't really want an answer. When someone asks for your advice, they usually don't really want to hear what you have to say; instead, they want you to tell them what they want to hear so they feel better about their choices. Not everyone fits into these descriptions, but most people I met do. So, perhaps it's better to keep my opinions and advice to myself.
One of these days, I'll figure out why some people become fast friends because of my personality and some won't ever be my friends because they don't. Who am I trying to fool? That's one thing no one will ever be able to figure out.
One of these days, I'll get it through my thick head that, as Popeye would say, I am who I am. I think I said it one of my other blogs, you get what you see and what you see is what you get. What you see and read at my page, in my comments, or in messages is the REAL me. There's no hiding behind someone else's picture or some other personality coming out only because I feel safe acting this way on the internet where people can't really see me. I don't make up and write things to try to get your sympathy or your praise. I have an ego just like everyone else, but I don't need it boosted enough to lie about myself.
One of these days, I'll stop caring about what other people think when I reveal the REAL me; whether or not they'll be my friends if I show the REAL me. I played those games once before in my life, trying to be what other people wanted me to be and act the way they wanted me to act. I can't do that any more. It's not worth the time or the effort to go on pretending to be something I'm not or never will be. So I'll stick with "what you see is what you get".
One of these days, we might meet in person. When that happens, you'll know exactly who I am because you've seen my picture, learned more about me, and know my personality. I won't even have to tell you my name or remind you we met first in cyberspace. You'll know me for who I am and what you've learned about me here at Windows Spaces. And that's just how it's going to have to be. August 13 BABY NOAH Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, Noah. Happy birthday to you. *blows noisemakers* Ooooops! Better not blow them too loud. Noah might be sleeping.
This is a different baby Noah than Hannah's. My cousin was due on the 11th, but they did a C-section today because the baby's heartbeat started dropping. I don't have all the stats or a picture to post yet. I was told Noah and Momma are doing fine. I just wanted to share the happy news. August 10 WHO DID THEY THINK ... ? Do you ever wonder why they make such a big deal on the news when some famous or well-known person dies? I admit, there are times some famous person's death gets to me. Usually it's when what they did in their life had some impact on my own. I don't mean they were my favorite actor, singer, or anything that simple. I'm talking about people who served as great examples of what it means to love and give unselfishly in their personal lives. But even then, I don't make some big deal out of the death. I'm not trying to make light of anyone's grieving, but I always had to ask myself "Why are people acting as if they're lives won't go on without these famous people?" I can understand that person's family and friends grieving, but what I'm talking about here is like when John Lennon was shot. Millions of people acted as if the world had just come to an end. Then I heard a song which said exactly what I was thinking long before I ever heard the song. Read the lyrics and think about them. The song is called "Who Did They Think He Was?". The song was written by Richard Leigh and Pat McManus and recorded by Conway Twitty.
A child was born in Tupelo in 1935. I'm grateful for his music, it forever changed my life. Oh, I loved, "Love Me Tender" and how that boy could sing, but when he died I wondered why millions called him "King". Tell me, who did they think ... who did they think he was? Who did they think ... who did they think he was? The whole world bowed and prayed, but it only made me say ... who did they think ... who did they think he was? He was born in Massachussetts in 1917, the second son of an Irishman. Oh, we all loved Kennedy. He was brave and strong and handsome, a helluva a president, but when he died millions cried like he was heaven sent. Tell me who did they think ... who did they think he was? Who did they think ... who did they think he was? The whole world bowed and prayed, but it only made me say ... who did they think ... who did they think he was? There was a child of heaven, born in Bethelem; just a simple carpenter with worn and callused hands. Oh, he healed the heart of many so they nailed him to a tree, with no one left to mourn his death but the women at his feet, crying who did they think ... who did they think He was? Who did they think ... who did they think He was? There was no one left to grieve but the women at his feet, crying who did they think ... who did they think He was? Who did they think ... who did they think He was? |
